LOUISVILLE, KY (Oct. 3, 2022) – Starting in 2004, the President and Congress declared October as Cybersecurity Awareness Month, highlighting online threats and what individuals and businesses can do to protect sensitive information. This year’s theme is See Yourself in Cyber and will focus on the human element of cybersecurity and how through more intentional actions both at work and at home, we can make ourselves less attractive targets to cybercriminals.

Cybersecurity awareness month

“The goal of Cybersecurity Month is to raise awareness and get people to act on what they can do to protect themselves,” said Jeff Chandler, Founder and CEO, Z-JAK Technologies. “It’s a collaborative effort between government and industry to educate individuals and business owners on best practices.”

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) recommend taking these four safety measures:

Use Strong Passwords

A good password should be at least 15 characters and contain lowercase and uppercase letters, symbols, and at least one number – the longer, the better. It’s recommended using a password manager to generate and track your passwords.

Enable Multi-Factor Authentication

63% of data breaches result from weak or stolen passwords. This is especially important to protect your email and financial accounts.

Update Your Software and Keep Your Systems Up to Date

77% of attacks exploit gaps in software already on computers. Set up a regular schedule each month to verify your systems have the latest updates.

Train Staff to Recognize and Report Phishing

91% of all cyberattacks start with a phishing email. Train your staff to recognize these emails instead of opening them and potentially infecting your network.

“A recent study found that doing these four things can mitigate 80 percent of all cyberattacks,” said Chandler. “It’s important for everyone, especially small businesses, as half of all cyber-attacks are aimed at them. One in five small businesses fall victim to cybercrime each year and of those nearly 60 percent are out of business within six months of the attack,” said Chandler.
